5 minutes with… Will Fewkes

Will Fewkes - RenaultSport

Hi Will, can you give us a little bit of a background on your career so far?

Sure, my father was RenaultSport from the beginning and I’ve been in and around the paddock my whole life. I took over the reigns of the management for RenaultSport UK in 2014 and before that I was working in driver management and Marketing with race teams in Asia and Europe.

Can you give us a bit more detail about the new Junior Clio cars?

Yup, it’s the same specification as a Renault Clio Cup car, essentially the only changes are the Michelin Pilot Sport road tyres and the different ECU. It’s all sealed but the Junior ECU locks out 6th gear so it’s only 5 gears on paddle-shift and limited to 100mph. In November I tested Callum Bradshaw at Snetterton. We changed the ECU over, changed the tyres over and within 15 minutes I’ve got another driver out in the afternoon in a Senior spec car, it’s that easy.

So is that your main USP over other series?

Effectively yes. It is so simple to change it from a Junior to a Senior so when it comes to that time when you graduate then you’re not having to buy another car.

What kind of off-track packages do you offer to drivers thinking of coming into the series?

Well we’re going to be working with the MSA with regards to them and the education they offer trackside. We always ensure the likes of Phil Glue and Josh Cook are with us and that we have the right organisational team in place to manage the championship and make sure everything is in order.

What does the Junior series winner win?

Half an entry into the 2018 Renault Clio Cup championship. And if the driver that wins is not old enough to graduate then they will get the value of that in parts for the next year of racing.

Do you think you will have complete novices come to the series, or some seasoned drivers?

I think we’ll have a mixture of both, we have some really big reputable names that have come from karting but we also have some novices that are testing at the minute to be ready to be up to speed with things by the time Round 1 comes around.
